Sonar (Perplexity) is a family of online models from Perplexity AI in which the language model is directly connected to web search and always grounded in current data and sources. Sonar, Sonar Pro, and Sonar Reasoning are positioned as search and research models: they automatically query the internet, select relevant content, and generate answers with source citations, making them ideal for factual accuracy, analytics, and research tasks.
Technically, Sonar is a lightweight and cost-efficient model with a context window of around 127–128K tokens, optimized for speed and price, while higher-tier variants (Sonar Pro and reasoning models) add stronger reasoning and chain-of-thought capabilities.
The models support grounding in the live web and flexibly manage the amount of retrieved context through parameters such as search_context_size, making it possible to balance search depth and cost.
