Description of Alpaca

Alpaca is a compact instruction-following model from Stanford, obtained by fine-tuning LLaMA-7B on a dataset of 52K synthetic instructions (the Self-Instruct approach). Despite its small size, Alpaca’s behavior quality in single-turn dialogues approaches models in the text-davinci-003 class, while remaining cheap and reproducible: the researchers emphasized that the base experiment can be replicated on a very modest budget. It is important to consider the licensing restrictions of LLaMA/Alpaca: the model is intended for research and academic use, rather than direct commercialization. From a technical standpoint, Alpaca is a 7B Transformer further trained via supervised fine-tuning on instructions and responses, which makes it a convenient foundation for experiments with conversational agents, assistant prototypes, industry demos, and rapid PoCs. In practice, the Alpaca approach (LLaMA + instructions) can also be transferred to other, more permissively licensed models.
